Petition against the Carmichael Mine on the Gallilee Basin in Queensland.

The Galilee Basin is a permian geological basin in the western Queensland region of Australia. It is located west of the Surat Basin and is part of the Great Artesian Basin drainage basin. Towns close to proposed mines in the basin include Alpha and Jericho but the basin extends north past Hughenden, south to Charleville and west beyond Winton to Middleton.

Queensland’s ‘in-the-coal-business’ Government is allowing one of the most reckless companies in the world, Adani, to create a monstrous new mine in the Galilee Basin.
It’s so massive that it would even require its very own shipping terminal in – of all places – the heart of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

We can still stop this. Environment Minister Hunt has the final say, and he could announce his decision at any moment. Join our call to reject the Carmichael mine.
This monster would be seven times the size of Sydney Harbour and would produce enough emissions to eclipse all the carbon emissions of New Zealand every year! Together we can remind our government what’s at stake and stop this disaster in the making.  GREENPEACE AUSTRALIA PACIFIC

Dear Minister,
I am writing to urge you not to approve the Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee Basin. As well as the local environmental impacts that the mine would have, it would require a new coal export terminal at Abbot Point which would require dredging and dumping in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, endangering this precious international treasure.
Just last month, UNESCO cited the dredging and dumping as one of the reasons it is still considering an 'in danger' listing for the reef.
I am also concerned about the contribution this massive mine will make to climate change. The annual emissions that will arise from burning coal from Carmichael are equivalent to the annual emissions reductions your government claims will be made through the Direct Action plan, effectively cancelling it out. Given the threat climate change poses to Australia - and the reef - this should be reason enough to reject it.
I look forward to you acting on behalf of the Great Barrier Reef and the national interest and rejecting the Carmichael coal mine.
Sincerely
Mary-Ellen Peters

Today is a sad day for the Barrier Reef as the Australian Fed Gov has passed the bill to mine the Galilee Basin.
I mourn for the Ocean creatures, the land, the water systems and the animals who will die to clear this land.
Shame on you Tony Abbott, you only see $ signs!
What about about preserving our land and precious eco system.
