Dazed over the Day's

IMG 8877
Sunday
So where do we get all the names of the days from that we have today, and why do we consider Sunday the first day of the week?  Why is church held for Christians on a Sunday and other religions celebrate on other days.   Rome had an awful lot to do with all of this as you will see if you read on.

The names of the days of the week have been taken from Teutonic and Roman deities. During the first Century CE after Jesus was crucified and martyred some 500 years later,  Rome decided that Saturday would be dedicated as the first day.  This experienced changes over time.  Sunday venerated the Sun, so this day became the allotted first day of the week due to its contemporary importance.  Sun worship was rife at that same time which is still evidenced today  in many church cathedrals in with the etching and statues and windows clearly depicting an astrological flavour.

Sunday

dies solis (Latin)  meaning "sun's day":  A well venerated "Pagan Roman" church holiday.  It is also known as Dominica (Latin) which means the Day of God.  The three languages of French, Spanish, and Italian which all came about because of  Latin.  Noticeably the Latin root meanings can be seen in those languages.  English is derived from both Old Germanic and Latin and a smattering of others.
French: dimanche; Italian: domenica; Spanish: domingo
German: Sonntag; Dutch: zondag.

Monday
Anglo-Saxon monandaeg, "the moon's day".  Day two was sacred to the goddess of the moon.
French: lundi; Italian: lunedi. Spanish: lunes. from Luna, "Moon"
German: Montag; Dutch: maandag.

Tuesday

The Norse god Tyr.   Rome  venerated their War-God Mars  (dies Martis)
French: mardi; Italian: martedi; Spanish: martes.
The Germans call Dienstag (meaning "Assembly Day"), in The Netherlands it is known as dinsdag, in Danmark as tirsdag and in Sweden tisdag.

Wednesday

To honor Wodan (Odin).
Rome venerated the God Mercury dies Mercurii,
French: mercredi; Italian: mercoledi; Spanish: miércoles.
German: Mittwoch; Dutch: woensdag.

Thursday

The Norse God Thor is responsible for Thursday like Thorsday. The Norse language refers to this day as Torsdag.  Rome named this day after Jupiter their most venerated god who was also known as Jove. dies Jovis ("Jove's Day")
French: jeudi; Italian: giovedi; Spanish: jueves.
German: Donnerstag; Dutch: donderdag.

Friday

The day in honor of the Norse goddess Frigg.
Old High German - frigedag.
Rome committed Friday to the most sacred goddess Venus. (dies veneris).
French: vendredi; Italian: venerdi; Spanish: viernes.
German: Freitag ; Dutch: vrijdag.

Saturday

This day was "Saturn's Day" - (dies Saturni, Saturnalia) This is the day Rome honored Saturn.
Anglo-Saxon: sater daeg.
French: samedi; Italian: sabato; Spanish: sábádo.
German: Samstag; Dutch: zaterdag.
Swedish: Lördag; and in Danish and Norse: Lørdag ("washing day").

Yay the time on the clock is back to normal

Up here On the hill the sun is now coming up at the same time but the clock will say something else! It will be the same as my northern friends further up there in Queensland.

Alignment is a good thing. It keeps us aligned and not maligned.

It is still dark longer in the morning and it gets dark at tea time when it is supposed to and I write often how I feel that this confuses our bodies and that we as humans don't all respond beautifully and bounce back like a hydrated flower to the fray.

Some of us never seemingly recover.  To me it feels like a constant state of being dragged this way and that in your head.  Could all of this come from purely having your sleep patterns played around with twice a year!  Being made to fit into a world that really does not respond to hormonal changes brought on by light, sound, heat, cold or all of these.

We really are not nice to ourselves.  This is hideous what we allow to go on and what we allow to affect our children.  We allow all of it.  We do this because we don't stop it.  I am going to make a list of ways that this can be avoided and how a human being can beat the rap that Daylight Saving can leave on the body.

The first thing on my list is to make sure I allow this change to occur in increments smaller than an hour.  I think a change of ten minutes a day over 6 days is more favourable than a straight hour just being lumped on us.  We really need to do this on a personal level.

Did anyone question the safety of doing such a thing?  Or did they just accept that it was all alright and that it was perfectly harmless.  Anything that messes with your body clock and your internal rhythms isn't harmless.  It should be viewed seriously, it effects the hormonal switches in your body which in turn effect your general health and well being!

Dawn is a fresh flower endowed with the scent of heaven.. Mary Peters

I keep them critical yet positive to break the chains

Every dawn is a new chance to make a change

Think about all the energy swirlin all around us

Free in the sky of belief I can fly
Aint no tellin what they're sellin man they're sheep in disguise

Keep this in mind I keep on my grind

I can do it anywhere, when I do it and
Bitch I'll sleep when I die.

“Though outwardly a gloomy shroud, The inner half of every cloud Is bright and shining: I therefore turn my clouds about And always wear them inside out To show the lining.”

Ellen Thorneycroft Fowler

The day began bathed in brilliant sunshine...

(Mrs. A.L. Felkin) Quotes Source: Wisdom of Folly.

Today on the hill the weather is really perplexing. Not sure if it will be so hot or pour rain. Storms all around us each day.

I suspect it is a fine day if your in love. Valentines Day is good for that. I have this beautiful heart that was given to me at the beach. So I guess every day is valentines day for me. We look for these beautiful things in nature. When we find them I carry on as though I have found a diamond or something equally precious.

When things go wrong. Look for the opportunity in that moment to change something to fix it up again. If it is in your power to do so then do so. All crisis brings change. Change is not to be feared but to be welcomed as the changeable seasons and the changeable days.

We cannot have sunny days everyday and therefore the lesson in nature for us is that sometimes things are not so bright. Wait patiently as this will pass just like the clouds do. The sun will come out on your situation once more.

Know when you have a good thing. Know that your freedom of choice is a possession that is priceless.

The Human Race has one very effective weapon, Laughter. - Mark Twain

Today is kind of special.  It is Rememberance day or Armistice day as it is also called.  This year if you had the last 2 digits of your birth year to your age it will in effect come to 111.  For me though I have to find humour in as much as possible to make me laugh!  Laughter is the best medicine. Laughter is good for you.  Laughter reduces stress and makes us healthy.  Today I will laugh at all these number ones.  That is what they are, "Ones".  Just ones. Its like a football academy all those sets of sticks in one place.

What ever you do today then, make sure you include a good old fashioned belly laugh... Just remember to laugh if you can.  Think of happy things and happy times and think of the things that may make you happy in your future.  Strive for that thing that brings you happiness.  "Our steps are ordered, but our state of mind isn't." Mary Peters 2011.
