Pavlov’s plants: new study shows plants can learn from experience

 And then remember.

Pavlov's plants: new study shows plants can learn from experience

Prudence Gibson, UNSW Australia
The first time I met the Australian evolutionary ecologist Monica Gagliano, she was wearing colourful paisley trousers and was giving an animated talk at a 2014 environmental humanities conference in Canberra.
Despite her passionate presentation, trouble was brewing. Something was not right in the room. A woman beside me in the audience kept shifting her weight. A man to my left had crossed his arms and released several voluble sighs.
Why? Because Gagliano was using phrases such as “plant cognitive ecology”, “learning and communication”. And because she was, and is, opening up areas of knowledge that some might feel threaten the sovereignty of humans over nature.
That day in Canberra three years ago, Gagliano’s time frames were questioned. The frequency of her experiments were interrogated. Her apparatus was cross-examined. Yet, despite resistance, I believe her work is ground-breaking and opens up debate about plant subjectivity and ethics.

Sensitive plants

In a famous 2013 New Yorker article by Michael Pollan, The Intelligent Plant, Gagliano was introduced to readers as someone whose experiments are extending the concept of cognition to the plant world.
The problem she is addressing is that if plants have brain-like functions and make sentient-like decisions, our existing perception of nature and ourselves must change.
These implications need further analysis. But, first: the experiments. What Gagliano did with her Mimosa pudica plants – also called “sensitive” plants – was to custom-build an apparatus whereby the plants could be suddenly dropped a foot or so on a regular basis.
Initially, on dropping, the plant retracted and curled its leaves, but after repeats, it stopped reacting. Not only did it appear to “learn” a behaviour (without a brain, mind you) but it also remembered.
Gagliano repeated the experiment at intervals and found that even after a break of a month or more, the Mimosa would still not retract its leaves after being dropped.
How does this work? According to Gagliano:

Gagliano has published her findings and edited various scholarly books on plant research, ethical implications and changed perceptions. She has collaborated with environmental lawyer Alessandro Pelizzon and others on the language problems of writing about plant life.
There is no vocabulary that can be used to talk about brain-like plant structures beyond mere vascular and survival processes, nor about decision-making, sentience, intelligence, learning and memory in the plant world.
There is much more work to be done by artists and humanists to develop these vocabularies together. Scholars such as Michael Marder, Dalia Nassar, Natasha Myers and myself are working in this field where there may be a realm of sophisticated activity in plant life that humans have not yet even fully comprehended.
A forthcoming book titled The Language of Plants is edited by Gagliano and colleagues, and deals with this complex and provocative problem, following on from her book The Green Thread.

Pavlov’s plants

Gagliano and her colleagues have just published a paper in Nature Scientific Reports that could rock our sense of human “self”.
This is a major coup for the plant scientist, who has suffered rejection from journals, for moving plant physiology into the domain of philosophy, for extending animal studies concepts of sentience to plants and more. Does this caution by journal editors reflect a fearfulness about our human place in the world?
The new paper explains her recent experiments where she sought to show plants can “learn” via classical conditioning, similar to the classic Pavlov’s dogs experiment.
Instead of food as the reward (the unconditioned simulus) and a bell as a neutral cue (the conditioned stimulus), she used light as the reward and air flow as the cue.
Gagliano and her colleagues used the air flow caused by a fan to predict the location and time of light. They found that the plants conditioned by the fan would grow towards the source of the air flow even when the light was not present, but only if they were “trained” to do so. This is like Pavlov ringing the bell and the dogs salivating, even if there was no food around.
Gagliano’s peas, Pisum sativum, also behaved according to a simulated circadian rhythm (temperature and light/dark control) and a sense of time of day, which is known to modulate behavioural processes such as learning in animals.
This experiment appears to show associative learning in plants. Gagliano has shown that plants don’t just respond to light and food in order to survive. They also choose and predict.
These findings will get people asking some tough questions. Do plants, like animals, have consciousness? If plants learn, choose and associate, what does this mean for our ethical relationship with them? Can humans learn from the adaptive capacities of plants?
To respond to light, fans and temperature in this way suggests that plants have far more sophisticated abilities than previously thought. The philosophical and ethical implications of this information are confounding.
It provokes further questions about the plant world that we have historically seen as inert and lacking in agency. With no brain, how can plants have cognition? Yet they exhibit functions we typically only associate with a brain.
Where does all this lead us? Well, into troubled waters, so grab your boat and paddle. We are in for a rough philosophical ride.

Using the BASKET WEAVE as an analogy of Life.

This is the funniest part. The world needs a percentage of people who will never get it.  That is how it all works.

None of what we see in our world would work if we all thought the same as each other. We would be in a void. It sounds good in theory but in reality the universe is driven by opposition. Things hold together with the under's and the overs.

The (under's and over's) Weft and the Warp, separately are mere threads, but together they make cloth.   Cloth is then useful for many items where once it was a bunch of threads.

This analogy is easy for a basket maker to understand. A basket to continue with this analogy, would fall apart if there were no tension from apposing forces.

The world is receiving its knowledge from words which can be manipulated.  If we take our knowledge from symbolism we are connecting with a different level because there is far less chance that this can be manipulated ie.  1 + 1 will always eqal 2 some where in the world.

Our alphabet and numbers are forms of symbols we still use to day in our daily life.  Symbolism is what speaks to the soul.

The Pineal Gland - Your Third Eye

Pituitary and pineal glands
Pituitary and pineal glands (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The Pineal gland is located within the vertebrate brain between the left and right hemispheres. It is ruffly the size of a grain of rice and is fully grown at 2 years of age. The gland is stimulated by darkness and hindered by light.
It produces melatonin, melatonin is a hormone which influences your biological clock.
It is said that the Pineal gland is the "The Crown Chakra" or "The Third Eye" and that it is a Bio-luminescent gland that can improve learning capabilities, increase memory, enhance intuition, wisdom and creativity and may be the link to enhancing psychic abilities.

From 2012 Awakening
Pineal Gland - The pineal gland is unique in that it sits alone in the brain whose other parts are paired. It is the first gland to be formed in the foetus and is distinguishable at 3 weeks. When our individual life force enters our foetal body at 7 weeks, the moment in which we become truly human, it passes through the pineal and triggers the first primordial flood of DMT ( N-dimethyltryptamine). Later, at birth, the pineal releases more DMT.  DMT is also capable of mediating pivotal experiences of deep meditation, shamanic states of consciousness, psychoses, spiritual emergence and near death experiences.

The pineal gland’s location deep in the brain seems to intimate hidden importance. In the days before its function as a physical eye that could see beyond space-time was discovered, it was considered a mystery linked to superstition and mysticism.

This pineal gland is activated by Light, and it controls the various bio-rhythms of the body. It works in harmony with the hypothalamus gland which directs the body’s thirst, hunger, sexual desire and the biological clock that determines our aging process. When it awakens, one feels a pressure at the base of the brain.

While the physiological function of the pineal gland has been unknown until recent times, mystical traditions and esoteric schools have long known this area in the middle of the brain to be the connecting link between the physical and spiritual worlds. Considered the most powerful and highest source of ethereal energy available to humans, the pineal gland has always been important in initiating supernatural powers.

Development of psychic talents has been closely associated with this organ of higher vision. To activate the ‘third eye’ is to raise one’s frequency and moving into higher consciousness – all is a consciousness experience perceived through the Eye of Time or Third Eye.

Meditation, Visualization Yoga, and all forms of Out of Body travel, open the Third Eye and allow you to ‘see’ beyond the physical. As you practice, you will get it faster and more frequently. Your psychic abilities will increase as well as your dream time messages. You may first begin with your eyes closed, but as you practice, you will be able to open your third eye by focusing your attention and receiving messages with your physical eyes open.

Planetary vibration/frequency is accelerating exponentially, allowing souls to peer into other realms far more easily than in the past. Frequency will continue to rise until consciousness evolves out of the physical.

A healthy lifestyle of exercise, outdoor activities, eating natural unprocessed foods, and reducing your sugar intake will be the first steps to activating your Pineal gland.

The Pineal gland resembles a pine cone. The pine cone has been used in symbolism for thousands of years! Many historical figures from Osiris to the Pope hold a staff of the pine cone. There is no question that the Pineal gland and its purpose have been known throughout history. There is also no question that those in power have suppressed the development and knowledge of the Pineal gland. Free thought and expression should never be suppressed.

So explore the infinite universe within you. Balance your mind and everything is possible.

Fresh as a water daisy is the life that springs from the fires of hell.

These are the fires and the fresh daisies and this is the water and the heat and the flowers that I am feeling when I am in a state of absolute abandon with the love of nature and just how beautifully perfectly in tune we are. It is like I can see the piece of gold that is in people.  At the base of this they are gold.

I look at the large tree out of my window as it looks back in at me. We are now connected in thought and I cannot pass under this tree without saying hello.  This one isn't an inlaw, its a spirit tree.  I have felt the tree spit at me.  This was awesome, it was like light rain on a hot day.  Its this large gum outside my window.

Golf ball
Golf ball (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
"If you have a golf ball sized consciousness , when you read a book you will  have a golf ball sized understanding and when you look outwards you will have a golf ball sized awareness and when you wake up in the morning a golf ball sized wakefulness.

But if you could expand that consciousness from golf ball to football, then when you read that book  you will have more understanding and when you look out, more awareness and when you wake up more wakefulness.

Its consciousness. There is an ocean of pure vibrant consciousness inside each one of us.    It's right at the source and base of mind and at the source of thought  and it is at the source of all matter.   All of the physical matter we have around us is the result of a frequency" - including us. http://www.youtube.com/user/KilluminatiTheMovie

IMG 4764 The Bees in my Garden
Hearing the buzz of a bee has a vibrational resonance.

If you adjust or amplify the frequency then this will change the structure of  the matter.  What is behind  this vibration?. It is the mind of the matrix. Indeed, they are truly connected.  If we can just take hold of this then we are more at ease to see the encoded knowledge that is all around us in the world.  Encoded knowledge is information that is conveyed in signs and symbols and we can find this knowledge all over....we just need to have more awareness to see it.

This helps to know this if you are struggling. Don't give up yet.  You have been asleep for a lot of reasons.  Family, Education, Religion, Politics and Media.  They are usually the reasons for the slumber.    There are those in business and government getting quite wealthy from your ignorance.  I can assure you this ignorance is their bliss and not yours.

All DNA is effected by vibrational sound.  DNA is effected by emotion.  Emotion comes from the heart.  The heart is the place where we tick. It is also the place of our Heart Chakra which I will discuss at the bottom of this post.  It is our life pulse and it has a vibration of approximately  7.8Hz .  This pulse aligns itself to the Earths pulse which is around 7.8Hz also.   This was a  constant  thing for a long time and this has now changed.  First it went to 8Hz  and now it has changed again.
"Apparently the frequency has matched that of the human heartbeat since the 70's  when scientists began measuring it. Since 1980, it has begun to speed up, and on 9/11 there was actually a giant spike in the earth's pulse". - Greg Braden
Braden also says in his book " AWAKENING TO ZERO POINT: THE COLLECTIVE INITIATION", that the frequency is up around 13Hz  / 13 cycles per second. It is  this 13 cycles per second that may become our new base resonant frequency with all harmonics based upon integer multiples of this fundamental vibration. This is the frequency that may trigger resonance with the new grid-matrix complex, signaling the close of the present cycle of evolution and the beginning of the "New Age." If ancient timetables are correct, it will happen within our lifetime."
There is much going on around us all.  There are sounds and banging gongs all around.  They're not natural sounds that will harmonize your body.  They disrupt you and make you feel weird and annoyed.  This is a reality.  To counteract the damage this does,  balance this as much as possible with time in nature and time in the wild as I call it.  Sitting anywhere for half hour where these awful noises can not be heard.  If this is not possible ... headphones and meditation.  Listen to healthy resonating sounds and meditate.

Listen to babies crying,  listen to someone singing, listen to the birds and the tiny sounds like the bees buzzing and the crinkly of the dew drying on the grass.  Listen to the waves or to the river running over stones,  listen to the wind and the rain.  If there is nothing to listen to, good!  This means even nature is giving you a break.  This won't happen in nature because nature is never quiet like that.

Naturally the cycles cycle on and nothing ever stays the same for even one second.  When you can acheieve this, your spirit will resonate closer to the Earths resonance and together we will all draw ourselves into a place of the ascension of energies.   We are approaching the time of change never ever before seen.  Why?  Because the universe has never been where it is right now ever before and it will never be again.  It will turn and be in the same spot but the same people will not be here and consequently this is the difference.  Nothing ever stays the same and the resonance and pulse will continue in everything everywhere.
DNA sequence
DNA sequence (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Let us go out in love and bring this football sized wakefulness with us and see what is going on all around.  Make a conscious decision to actually free yourself from bondage.

The strange words at the top are the ancient solfeggio frequencies that start at 174 and increase with an integer of 111 between each like thus: 174 / 285 / 396 / 417 / 528 / 639 / 741... so on and so forth.  These frequencies align with the chakra points in our bodies and this is the amazing part of this. These sounds were taken from us and a new set of sounds introduced,  this knowledge is no longer hidden from the world.  Those latin words up top have true power attatched to them and align with the planets and with the chakras and the resonances and even one more step to this is it can all be used against you and it has!

So wake up to this fact to begin with.  Study what you can on all of this.  The 22 cards of the major acana match up to the 22 hebrew letters in the ancient hebrew alphabet and it all begins with four letters and this also replicates our DNA sequencing.  In Hermetic wisdom the whole story is so clear as to see that we are all made up of star material and the story just grows.  The story is simple though because the entirety of life is inside of you and inside of everyone and it is everywhere in everything.

The collective thoughts of everyone for all time are collected as are the tears,  the tears being all of the emotion over all of the ages with all of the peoples who have ever inhabited the Earth is all collected in one great and awesome place and that place is the Akashic Record.  The Akashic record is there for all of us and our attachment to this is in our very DNA.  It is in the cellular memory of us all.

The Chakra Points in our bodies based on traditional writings there are 88,000 Chakras in the body, covering every area.

The majority of Chakras are small and insignificant.

Forty Chakras have significant functions - in the hands, feet, fingertips and shoulders.

The most significant Chakras are the Seven Main Chakras positioned along the central line of the body, from the base of the spine to the top of the head.

Chakras are located n the ethereal body and express the embodiment of spiritual energy on the physical plane.
