Reunion for founding father’s family
- Warwick Daily News
DESCENDANTS of William Spreadborough, a Warwick founding father, are invited to family reunion on April 13-14.
Mr Spreadborough moved to the Darling Downs in 1849, with his second wife Mary and his four daughters, to take a gardening job at the Talgai station and later at Canning Downs station.
Their first Australia-born son, James, was born at Talgai and became the Warwick Town Clerk from 1902-18.
William purchased a large tract of land south of Warwick and set up one of the region’s first vineyards and orchards called Norbiton.
The Spreadborough family is credited with acclimatising wine grapes in the Warwick district and William was a keen vigneron and an important pioneer of the Queensland wine industry.
By 1860, with the birth of three more children, Thomas, Richard and Octavius, the Spreadborough family had increased to 10 children.
The families connected to William include: Bowles, Glasby, Grayson, Keable, Knight, Lamb, Moss and Peters.
Lexene Spreadborough is organising the reunion.
Anyone interested in attending or who would like further information should phone her on 0427 311 498.
