So many words in our English language are pulled from a myriad of other languages / cultures. English presents itself as a complete stew of words and it is often very misleading.
The word Forest stems from the french Language as do so many other English words we use daily. Edward Rutherfurd explains this true meaning of the word for us.
"Forest: a french term. It did not mean woodland, although huge woods lay within it's borders, but rather, an area set apart - a reservation - for the king's hunting."Edward Rutherfurd, (The New Forest)
